Selling Firecrackers & Fireworks Online Is Genuinely Illegal in Malaysia — Here's Why

These days you can buy just about anything online — but firecrackers are not one of them. Many people don't realise this.

Online sales = illegal, full stop

Selling firecrackers and fireworks online is completely banned. The important thing to understand: this ban applies even if the product is a permitted type like 'Happy Boom' and 'Pop-Pop'.

So if you see an online shop selling firecrackers — that's against the law, no matter what type of product it is.

Why, though?

Legal firecracker sales are only allowed to licensed traders, and are subject to:

• A permit from the District Police Headquarters (IPD)
• Location conditions approved by the local authority
• Prescribed safety conditions
• Regular inspections by PDRM and the Fire Department

Online sales can't meet any of these control requirements — no location control, no inspection, no buyer verification. That's why it's banned outright.

The risks if you break the rules

Anyone who possesses, sells or plays with firecrackers other than those permitted can face action under Sections 7 and 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 (Act 207):

• Imprisonment of up to 7 years
• A fine of up to RM10,000
• Or both

So how do you buy the right way?

Buy from a licensed trader who holds a valid permit — usually a physical shop approved during the festive season. Safer, more peace of mind, and you're not exposed to any legal risk.
